What Open Graph tags are
Open Graph tags are meta tags in the page head, such as og:title, og:description and og:image, that tell Facebook, LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp, Slack and other apps what to show when someone shares the link. Without them, apps guess, often picking the wrong image or a menu text as the description.
This tool fetches the page, reads its Open Graph tags (falling back to the normal title and meta description, as most apps do) and shows a preview card with the image, title, description and domain. It also lists which of the three main tags are missing and which Twitter card type the page declares.
A good preview gets more clicks on every share, from your own posts and from customers sharing your products.
How to check a link preview
- Paste the URL of the page you plan to share.
- Run the check to see the preview card.
- Look at the missing tags list and add og:title, og:description and og:image where needed.
- After fixing the tags, refresh the cached preview in each network's own debugger before sharing again.
Examples
Product page with the wrong image
Without og:image, a network may pick the logo or a payment icon. Set og:image to the main product photo, ideally 1200 × 630 pixels.
Article shared on LinkedIn
og:title can be more conversational than the SEO title, for example a question, while og:description gives a one-sentence reason to read.
Minimal tag set
<meta property="og:title" content="…">, <meta property="og:description" content="…">, <meta property="og:image" content="https://…/share.jpg"> and <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Open Graph image be?
1200 × 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) works on most networks. Keep important text away from the edges, as some apps crop the image to a square.
I fixed my tags but the old preview still shows. Why?
Networks cache previews. Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector to fetch the page again. Messaging apps refresh on their own after some time.
Do Open Graph tags help SEO?
They are not a ranking factor in Google, but better previews mean more clicks and shares, which bring more visitors and more chances of being linked.
Does X (Twitter) use Open Graph tags?
Yes, X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image. Add twitter:card with summary_large_image to get the large image layout.
Why does the tool show no image?
The page has no og:image tag, the image URL is relative or broken, or the page blocked our request. Use an absolute https:// URL for the image.
