Why the title and description in search results matter
The title and description are the first thing people see in Google, before they ever visit your site. A clear, specific snippet earns more clicks from the same ranking position, and more clicks means more traffic without ranking higher.
Google cuts long titles and descriptions based on pixel width, roughly 600 pixels for titles on desktop. This tool uses the common safe ranges: 30 to 60 characters for the title and 70 to 160 for the description. Each field is marked as missing, too short, good or too long while you type.
Google may rewrite a title or description when it thinks another text answers the search better. Writing one that matches the page content and the search intent is the best way to keep yours.
How to use the SERP preview
- Enter the page URL to see the breadcrumb-style address shown above the title.
- Write the meta title. Put the main keyword near the start and keep it between 30 and 60 characters.
- Write the meta description: what the page offers and why to click, in 70 to 160 characters.
- Check the preview and the length labels, adjust until both are marked as good, then copy the texts into your CMS.
Before and after examples
Product category page
Before: "Shoes | Products | Example Store | Best online store for all footwear needs" (too long, cut off). After: "Men's Running Shoes, Free Delivery | Example Store" (50 characters, keyword first).
Blog article
Description before: "Read our article." (too short, Google will likely pick its own text). After: "Learn how to choose running shoes for your foot type, with a 5-step fitting checklist and the mistakes that cause injuries."
Local business
Title: "Dentist in Cluj-Napoca, Same-Day Appointments | Smile Clinic". City, service and a reason to choose you fit in under 60 characters.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a meta title be?
Aim for 30 to 60 characters. Google truncates by pixel width (about 600 px), so wide letters like W or M use more space than i or l. Put the important words first so they survive any cut.
How long should a meta description be?
Between 70 and 160 characters works well on most devices. Shorter descriptions are often replaced by Google with text from the page, and longer ones get cut off with an ellipsis.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
Not directly. Google has said the meta description is not a ranking factor, but it strongly influences click-through rate, and that decides how much traffic a ranking actually brings.
Why does Google show a different title than mine?
Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords, identical across pages or not matching the content. Keep titles unique, descriptive and consistent with the H1 to reduce rewrites.
Is the preview exactly what Google will show?
It is a close approximation. Google decides the final layout, may add dates, ratings or site links, and changes styles from time to time. Use the length checks as a guide, not a guarantee.
