What UTM parameters are and why they matter
UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link, such as ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale. When someone clicks the link, Google Analytics 4 and most other analytics tools read the tags and attribute the visit, and any sale that follows, to that source, medium and campaign.
Without UTMs, traffic from emails, PDFs, messaging apps or some social apps often lands in Direct or Referral, so you cannot tell which campaign worked. With consistent tags you can compare channels fairly and stop spending on the ones that do not convert.
This builder checks that the URL is valid, requires the three parameters every campaign needs (source, medium and campaign), keeps any query string the page already has and encodes special characters for you.
How to build a UTM link
- Paste the page URL people should land on, including https://.
- Fill in the source: where the traffic comes from, for example facebook, google or newsletter.
- Fill in the medium: the type of channel, for example cpc, email or social.
- Name the campaign, for example black_friday_2026. Add term and content only if you need to tell keywords or ad variants apart.
- Copy the finished link and use it in your ad, email or post. Test it once and check the visit in GA4 under Reports › Acquisition › Traffic acquisition.
UTM examples you can copy
Newsletter
https://shop.example.com/sale?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale_2026. Using email as the medium puts the visit in the Email channel in GA4.
Paid Facebook or Instagram ad
https://shop.example.com/sneakers?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=sneakers_launch&utm_content=video_15s. utm_content tells the video ad apart from the image ad in the same campaign.
Influencer or partner link
https://shop.example.com/?utm_source=partner_name&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=summer_collab. One source per partner shows exactly how much traffic and revenue each one brings.
Frequently asked questions
Which UTM parameters are required?
Analytics tools only need utm_source, but you should always set utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign together. This builder requires all three. utm_term (keyword) and utm_content (ad variant) are optional.
Should UTM values be lowercase?
Yes. Google Analytics is case sensitive, so Facebook and facebook show up as two different sources. Pick one naming convention, use lowercase and underscores instead of spaces, and keep it the same across the team.
Can I use UTM parameters on internal links?
No. A UTM on a link inside your own site overwrites the original source of the visit, so the sale gets credited to your own page instead of the campaign that brought the visitor. Use UTMs only on links that point to your site from outside.
Do I need UTMs for Google Ads?
Usually not. If your Google Ads account is linked to GA4 with auto-tagging on, the gclid parameter already carries campaign data. Use UTMs for platforms that are not linked, such as email, social posts, Meta or TikTok ads and offline QR codes.
Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
Not when used on campaign links. Search engines generally ignore parameters on links shared outside your site, and pages with a correct canonical tag consolidate any tagged URLs. Just avoid adding UTMs to your own internal links and sitemaps.
